What Is World Sleep Day?

World Sleep Day is an annual event that is organized by the World Sleep Society, and falls on the Friday before the spring vernal equinox each year. The 2024 theme is “Sleep Equity For Global Health,” and the goal of this celebration is to help raise sleep health awareness. Through activities and productive conversations, both in person and online, World Sleep Day promotes sleep health in communities across the globe. Not only this but World Sleep Day also aims to shed light on sleep problems and educate you about managing sleep disorders.

What Are Sleep Disorders?

A sleep disorder is a medical condition that consistently impacts an individual’s sleep quality and/or their ability to get enough sleep. There are 80 different types of sleep disorders, including insomnia, narcolepsy, and sleep apnea. Because sleep is essential for your overall health, sleep disorders go beyond negatively impacting just your sleep; sleep deprivation can disrupt both your physical and mental health.

Sleep disorders can also be difficult to identify, because they occur while you’re sleeping. In fact, it is estimated by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute that anywhere from 50 to 70 million Americans have some form of sleep disorder. However, very few have been diagnosed, which is why the World Sleep Society has dedicated an entire day to promote sleep health and start conversations about the importance of sleep.

How Is World Sleep Day Celebrated?

There are several different ways you can celebrate World Sleep Day! The best place to start is by visiting worldsleepday.org, where you can find a list of activities compiled by the World Sleep Day Committee. These awareness activities range from small to big, in-person to virtual, and nation to nation. Individuals, organizations, and health advocates must apply and be accepted as “World Sleep Day Delegates” to officially host World Sleep Day activities.

This year, Aeroflow Sleep is proud to serve as an official 2024 World Sleep Day Delegate! To celebrate, we hosted an Instagram Live special on Wednesday, March 13 where we discussed how it is not normal to be sleepy all of the time. We invite you to watch the recording below and comment your thoughts or questions so we can answer them.

Aeroflow Sleep apologizes for the technical difficulties in the beginning of the video. Please skip ahead approximately 10 minutes to reach the start of the interview.

What Activities Or Events Take Place On World Sleep Day?

As mentioned above, you can find a full list of sleep awareness activities on the official World Sleep Day website. You can even filter by “country” to find an event that is more interesting or relevant for you. These events range from webinars in Italy to "free sleep app trials” in Singapore, and they all aspire to elevate sleep health conversations across the globe.

No matter which peaks your interest, the main call to action these activities share is for each individual to evaluate their own sleep health and habits.

How Can You Change Your Sleep Habits?

It is important to pay attention to your sleep patterns and practice healthy sleep habits whether you have a sleep disorder or not. We recommend checking out the linked tips below, which have been medically-reviewed by a few of Aeroflow Sleep’s  favorite experts:

However, if you are consistently struggling to get a good night’s sleep, changing your sleep habits is not the only action you should take. You may actually have a sleep disorder, so reach out to a sleep medicine professional for a sleep study or CPAP consultation. After all, quality sleep matters for your well-being. Be sure to advocate for yourself if you notice changes in your sleep or energy levels.

On behalf of the Aeroflow Sleep team, we hope you have a happy World Sleep Day! It is our mission to help individuals sleep well and live better, and we are honored to be a part of the sleep health movement. Be sure to follow us on social media, watch our recorded awareness event, and check out worldsleepday.org for more information!
