We carry the new Luna II Auto CPAP Machine made by 3B Medical as well as all three of their CPAP masks. The question is, are any of them right for your sleep apnea therapy? Our blog has the answer. Luna II Auto CPAP Machine Features and Benefits

The 3B Medical Luna II Auto CPAP Machine offers features and benefits that are toe-to-toe with its top competitor, the ResMed AirSense 10 CPAP Machine:

  • Both are equipped with data management software, an LCD screen, pre-installed SD card, and a smartphone app.
  • Both manufacturers include ramp and auto start on all models.
  • Both have expiratory pressure relief (EPR;) Luna 2 calls theirs Reslex.
  • All 3B Medical and ResMed CPAP masks give their patients prime comfort features; like exhalation relief ports.
  • Both come with a carrying case.

These are the reasons Luna 2 makes the cut overall, but what is the difference between a Luna 2 CPAP and a ResMed AirSense 10? Aside from it having a small footprint on your nightstand–the dimensions of the Luna 2 CPAP are 10.7” x 7.2” x 4.5”, the Luna 2 is unique, because it comes with the following features as a part of 3B’s no-cost data capture option:

  • Advanced Clinical Efficiency Reporting
  • QR-Coded Data for Smartphone Uploads
  • Password-Protected WiFi Signal

What does all of that mean? Well, the Luna 2 is equipped with its own way to track your CPAP compliance, making it easy for you to communicate with your doctor and insurance provider about how effective your CPAP therapy is in real-time.

Why is CPAP compliance important?

Your first 90 days on CPAP is known as your compliance period, and it’s important that you record your CPAP use within that time frame in order to prove to your insurance provider that you actually need a CPAP device. Most insurance companies, Medicare, and Medicaid require you to use your CPAP machine a minimum of 4 hours per night for 21 consecutive days. If this data isn’t collected, insurance won’t cover the cost.

Insurance coverage isn’t the only reason CPAP compliance is important; having a routine set will help you get used to your CPAP machine more easily. Research shows, “[84%] of those who used CPAP for more than 4 hours a day at Day 30 used CPAP for an average of more than [that,] compared with only 26% of those who used CPAP for less.”

How does the Luna 2 CPAP work?

Compliance data (or therapy data) is typically collected two ways: with SD cards and cellular or WiFi modems or through smartphone apps and bluetooth. Luna 2 uses a combination of both. Either way, the Luna 2 CPAP works towards the same goal as any auto CPAP machine; it uses sleep therapy pressure to support your upper airway, and compliance ensures you’re getting enough of that pressure every night.

To track your compliance data, all you need to do is download the 3B Luna QR app and scan the QR code found on your machine. It can be done in 2-3 easy steps:

  1. Put your machine in Stand-By Mode and briefly press the alarm silence button located to the left of its selector knob. A QR code should now be displayed on your machine.
  2. Your iCode QR+ icon should be pink. If it is not pink, turn the knob until it is pink.
  3. Finally, open the 3B Luna QR app on your smartphone to scan the QR code. This will send your sleep data to your Aeroflow patient file. It’s that easy!

Your Luna 2 will need to be connected to WiFi in order to send your data to us. If you have not connected your machine to WiFi before, those steps are easy too:

  1. First, plug in your CPAP machine’s power cord. This is your machine’s power supply and is needed to connect to WiFi.
  2. Then, press and hold the ramp button until your single dial menu appears on the LCD display screen.
  3. Press the button once to activate it and rotate the single dial until “WiFi” is highlighted. Press the button again to view all available WiFi networks.
  4. Scroll to find yours and press to select. You should now have access to the WiFi password menu.
  5. Rotate the single dial to highlight each character (letter, number, or symbol) of your password. Then, press the button to select them. Upper and lower case letters can be selected by using the arrow in the upper left hand corner of the grid.
  6. Once your password is entered, rotate the single dial until the Enter key in the bottom right hand corner of the grid is highlighted and press the button to select the Enter key.

Connection can take up to 15 seconds, but once connected to WiFi, your daily data will be sent automatically. Feel free to read the Luna 2 CPAP user manual and the exclusive Aeroflow Sleep packing insert that comes with your order too, or contact your dedicated Sleep Specialist if you have any questions.

Are Luna CPAP machines recalled?

No, Luna 2 CPAP machines are not currently recalled, however this is commonly asked due to Philips Respironics’ Dreamstation CPAP Machine being recalled. Philips Respironics is another PAP machine manufacturer whose best-selling product was, according to Aeroflow Sleep’s Director of Sales, Eric Mongeau, “found to be releasing toxic gasses into the machine’s airway and had the potential for users to inhale or or swallow harmful gasses.” This is not something you have to worry about with Luna 2.

Of course, the recall is impacting orders and affecting shipping times nationwide, so Aeroflow Sleep came up with a contract with 3B Medical that says for every one Luna 2 CPAP machine we receive, we also receive a 3B CPAP mask. This 1:1 agreement benefits you, the patient, because we can provide you not only with a CPAP machine amidst the shortage but with the CPAP mask that is most compatible with a Luna 2.

The 3B CPAP Masks That Can Help You

It’s true that most every CPAP mask can work with the Luna 2, but 3B Medical created its own line to prevent mask leaks. After all, designs that are meant to go together just makes sense, and this is true for any mask type; 3B has full face masks, nasal masks, and nasal pillow masks available. But which one is right for you?

3B Siesta Full-Face Mask

If you breathe through your mouth, the 3B Siesta Full-Face Mask is what you want! This mask covers both your nose and mouth, guaranteeing airflow through both possible airways.

That said, this may not be the right choice for you if you’re prone to panic attacks. Some patients find the full coverage confining.

3B Siesta Nasal Mask

Patients who suffer from claustrophobia should turn to the 3B Siesta Nasal Mask instead. It only covers the nose, so the smaller cushion offers a little more flexibility and comfort while you sleep at night.

If you suffer from claustrophobia AND breathe through your mouth, invest in a chinstrap. This piece of fabric attaches to your headgear, wraps beneath your chin, and forces your jaw closed.

3B Rio II Nasal Pillow Mask

The name of the product isn’t all that 3B Medical switched up with their Rio II nasal pillow mask. This option is perfect for patients who are worried about mask leaks, because the nasal pillow cushions literally insert into your nasal passages.
